WoundExpert, the HITECH Act, and Meaningful Use
by Christopher Kohler, Director of Health Information Systems
|
On February 17, 2009, President Obama signed the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act, as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). The HITECH Act provides legislation to improve healthcare in the United States through the development of Information Technology, and outlines a schedule of incentive payments to physicians and hospital providers who are successful in becoming meaningful users of certified electronic health record (EHR) technology.
Specifically, the five goals of this legislation are to:
- Improve quality, safety, and efficiency, and reduce health disparities
- Engage patients and their families
- Improve care
- Ensure privacy and security protections for personal health information (PHI)
- Improve public health
Because this legislation is so important and can be challenging, we continuously monitor regulations, attend conferences, and actively participate in all manners around the HITECH Act and the meaningful use criteria. Last spring, when meaningful use was first defined, Net Health evaluated the criteria against WoundExpert to identify any gaps. As a result, Net Health developed a plan to enable our clients to meet the meaningful use goals by 2011.
In January 2009, we released a new Orders Interface to enhance our Computerized Provider Order Entry (CPOE) feature. This is the first of our WoundExpert projects in support of meaningful use, and Net Health will continue to feature technological updates each quarter throughout 2010.
The interim final rule defining meaningful use and its phased approach was released by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) on December 30, 2009. This rule is expected to be in law by mid-spring. Please feel free to contact Christopher Kohler, Director of Health Information Systems, if you have any related questions or comments.

Did You Know
by Debby Dale, Director of Client Services
|
Did you know… that WoundExpert has the capability to add barcodes to your forms, and that you can configure the locations of those barcodes on the printable documents?
Did you know… Did you know that you can configure a subset of your visit documentation forms? It is called the medical record copy. Even if your medical records department does not have this, you can use it in combination with your All Visits Report to see an entire patient history of one or more forms (similar to all of the Progress Notes).
Did you know… that you can configure the items in Physician Orders to match the orders written by your physicians?
Did you know… that you can edit the Discharge Instructions to be written in any language suitable for your client base?
For further questions, please email Feedback and be sure to include your name and email address in your response. For sales inquiries, please email Sales or call 800.611.6281, option 3, for additional information. Thank you.
